The Shanghai Museum is actually some sort of showcase of Chinese culture throughout the millenia. Everything Chinese was on display here, including clothes. To the outside world, China looks like one homogenous nation, however it is actually composed of many different ethnicities. Some of them, I have already become familiar with, the Dong 侗, Yao 瑶 and the Miao 苗 in particular are quite prominent especially in the southwestern region where the predominate.

The Shanghai Museum showcases the traditional costumes which are used by these people. Actually, I have also become familiar with these costumes as they seem to be common in China, in particular, dress up photography booths in scenic spots. I don’t really know why but the Chinese seem to dig this kind of thing. You can probably say that they probably invented cosplaying when they dress up as emperors or empresses.
