Yue Fei Tomb 岳飞墓 and Stele

Lest we forget what this place is, this is the mausoleum of the great Chinese patriot Yue Fei 岳飞. There is a temple for people to venerate him but being a mausoleum, the tomb of Yue Fei is also here. It was actually in the main courtyard, that is if I didn’t veer off to the Yue Fei Temple. The tomb is not really that grand, however, it is marked by several statues on both side of the tomb. The tomb itself is a simple mound. This was a bit underwhelming for me since all I can see is this mound. This reminded me of the tomb of Confucius which was also just a simple mound.

I guess now matter how great you are, in the end we are all the same, saint or patriot. Historians differ on how Yue Fei died. One thing is clear, he was betrayed by one of the people in government and accused of crimes. Knowing the true nature of Yue Fei, later generations built statues of the traitors tied and kneeling in front of Yue Fei’s tomb. You can see these statues near the entrance to the tomb grounds.
