From the looks of this, the Shanghai Flower and Bird Market is one of the more unique markets I have visited. I remember visiting the Bird Market in Hong Kong but they don’t have exotic stuff like the ones they have here in Shanghai. Not just limiting themselves to birds. The markets also have turtles, frogs and most noticeably, insects. Upon entering the market you will be greeted by a cacophony of chirps from various kinds of insects. I don’t even know what their names are. Most are kept inside boxes or jars with a breathable cap where the insect and breathe and transmit their sounds.

They could be crickets or cicadas but I wasn’t sure, what I’m sure of is that some of them were really huge and creepy. I don’t see myself keeping such kind of pets for myself. However, the sounds the insects make are quite nice and it can make you feel like you are in a forest at night. The insects have their own food too and they can naturally be purchased here too. Surprisingly enough, the place doesn’t stink as much as I expected it to. I guess the city government has enforced stricter guidelines on sanitation after fighting with bird flu scares and the like.
