Still Waters in Zhou Zhuang 周庄
Due to its proximity to the big city of Shanghai, Zhou Zhuang is uniquely position to catch a large chunk of the tourist traffic from that city. There are also other major cities nearby such as Suzhou and Hangzhou which are also quite affluent. As a result, Zhou Zhuang is constantly beseiged by tourists. And it shows since there are a lot of shops along the most frequented places selling local snacks and handicrafts.

One may therefore find it daunting to find places which are not super busy. In fact, it is quite easy. Zhou Zhuang has numerous alleys to get lost in that some do not even see tourists at all. I would say that this is the real face of Zhou Zhuang, especially if they don’t come and sell you something. In these places, you might find the occasional artist trying to paint a scene or just some old folks relaxing the day away.
