Wandering Around Xidi 西递 Ancient Village

As I was lurking around the outskirts of Xidi 西递 Ancient Town, I happened to chance upon my British companion who happened to be at the same place. He was surprised to see me there and told him how the back door was wide open. Relieved that he had someone to talk to, he remarked that he liked this village more than Hongcun 宏村. I couldn’t agree with him more. Although both villages were similar, Xidi was the more charming one.

For one, Xidi’s houses were more compact giving more atmosphere to the narrow alleys that crisscross the village. The fact that a lot of students were brought here for art class also attests to the beauty of this village. What’s more despite its success, the village remains very much what it was. People continue about their business and hawkers aren’t pushy for a change. All the while we were wandering around the village, I kept a watchful eye for any possible checkers since I was technically not allowed to enter the village.
