More than just the house, the Confucius Mansion has been the government offices of the descendants of the the great sage. The lucky descendants were accorded the rank of Duke of Yansheng by Liu Bang 刘邦 way back in 195 BC. In the Song dynasty, the rank was converted into a hereditary rank. The mansion used to be part of the Confucius Temple grounds but has been separated from the temple a while back. However, the descendants of Confucius still tend to the temple as they did a long time ago.

The Kong family tree is one of the most detailed in the world and most of his direct descendants lived here. Most because the last few moved to Taiwan during civil war where they continue to stay. The mansion has since expanded from it humble beginnings to become a 150+ hall and 480 room mansion, hardly the type of place you might expect a person such as Confucius to stay in. Recently, together with the other two Confucius, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
