On one street perpendicular to Wangfujing shopping street in Beijing, was another ubuiquitous feature of Chinese cities. It was a food street. A portion of Donghuamen road was closed off and turned into a food street. It is here where numerous snacks from all over the country are sold, of course with special emphasis on snacks from Beijing. The food street is composed of tens of stores and as expected, it was a very lively and colorful place.

As a result, Donghuamen Night Market is quite well known as a food street and tourists from all over China and the world come here to sample what snack Beijing has to offer. What I noticed was that the stores keep mentioning about “Old Beijing” snacks 老北京. I figured that for them to say this was because it is no longer the way it was before. It is good that they try to keep true to the original spirit and taste of these snacks.

Walking down the food street will cause you headaches as you won’t know what to eat here. There was just so many to choose from, although some will be selling some stuff which others also sell. As a result competition is tight. But prices are all posted on the stores so it was easy to figure out the price. The names of the food were also in English to help the Chinese language challenged visitors.
