Barbeque at Beijing

To be honest, I know nothing about Beijing food, of course this is aside from the world famous Peking duck which can be practically found in any decent Chinese restaurant. Other than that, I didn’t do much research on Beijing food. Is it just dumplings or something else? I was still feeling my way around Beijing and I wasn’t sure what to eat yet. Conveniently, the Beijing Lama Temple International Youth Hostel 北京雍和国际青年旅社was right behind a famous food street called Ghost Street or 簋街.

Walking down the Ghost Street was an interesting experience as I would see a lot of delicious looking food, however most of these are beyond my budget, and besides, eating alone isn’t much fun. I settled on a little favorite of mine – barbeque, Chinese style. The barbeque here is called shaokao 烧烤 much like western barbeque, the meat is grilled in skewers but in this case, chilli, salt and cumin are sprinkled on them to great effect.

The barbeque here is mostly northwestern Chinese in origin, where there is a large Muslim population. As a result, there is no pork at all, but it doesn’t matter. They practically barbeque everything else. The favorite here is mutton, but you can always order other stuff like chicken wing, chicken innards, lamb ribs or even a small lamb leg. What is best about this, is that you can get to try a whole array of food for under CNY 20. I would end up coming back here several times since I liked it so much.
