My camera battery is about to go flat and so was I. The last event I will be watching will be the women’s floor exercies. This was also quite convenient for me since I was already strategically positioned to be able to take photos. The floor was at the center of the event hall and it is quite large. Which means taking photos of this event will be very tricky. This floor exercises is for women and it is usually accompanied by music. The gymnasts will showcase their grace not only with dance but also their skill in performing gymnastic moves.

The women’s floor exercises was arguably the most entertaining of all the events that I watched. There is more feeling as the gymnast can use the music to liven up the crowd. In this event, charisma counts a lot. Many a gymnast found themselves shot to fame because of this event. And so it started, I’ve seen these events often enough to know what to expect. The gymnasts would run from one corner to another executing jumps and twists. Remember that the floor has four corners and it quite difficult to guess what they will be doing next.

One of the challenges I encountered is when the gymnast would use one particular diagonal, the one which goes from near my corner to the corner furthest away from me. It find it very diffcult to keep the gymnast in the frame since they are all running very fast and keep jumping and turning. Needless to say I didn’t really get a lot of decent shots here. What’s more the more further away they move, the more difficult it was for me to focus on them. My camera can automatically focus of moving objects but I don’t think it is fast enough to handl this kind of event.

The event woke up the crowd with the gymnasts playing to them. These gymnasts are natural dancers and it is no surprise that they are all quite charismatic. One in particular, was Diana Bulimar from Romania, which has a rich tradition of great gymnasts. She, incidentally also her birthday, woke up the crowd with her playful and very energetic performance but still she was only good enough for a silver as she was no match for the exemplary performance of Tan Sixin who brought back yet another gold this time in the floor exercises.

I decided that I had enough photos with me, there was yet another event, the last one which has yet to start but it was already past nine in the evening and there was still work tomorrow, so I decided to call it a night. I surprisingly managed to take over 800 photos on a dying battery. The 800 photos comes from numerous burst modes which I need to take to be able to freeze the gymnasts in mid air. This event has been a wake up call for me. In these types of events, I definitely need a faster lens and an equally fast flash card. If this were the summer Olympics I would never forgive myself for missing great shots.
