Male Gymnasts Presenting Themselves to the Judges

I hardly ever watch sporting events live, though I’ve had the fortune to be able to experience professional basketball games live, this was never really a passion of mine. When I heard the Youth Olympic Games were to be held in Singaore, I dismissed it as another one of those events that are not really that important. Some friends of mine dismiss it as being “not the Olympics” and “no one’s heard about it”. Of course, it is the first one ever and it is natural for it not to be heard of. Anyway, I decided to go against my friends’ opinion and just try to watch just for once. After all, it would be a very long time before the Youth Olympic Games ever come back to Singapore, most likely not in our lifetimes.

At the gymnastics competitions being held at the Bishan Sports Hall, the men’s vault final will go first. As you may have seen in numerous Olympic competitions the gymnast runs down a path a vaults himself in the air and executes twists and turns and tries to land on both his feet. This is not as simple as it sounds and it shows. Talented as these male gymnasts as they are the vault is quite the challenge to properly execute. Naturally, the more difficult the performance, the higher the score. The more difficult it is, the more difficult it is to nail that landing. There were numerous times which these gymnasts failed to nail that landing, others landing flat on their butt. The appreciative crowd nonetheless applauds the hardworking gymnasts.

I noticed the male gymnasts were mostly from Europe. Young as they are, their arms and shoulders are very well built and they could easily pound me silly with those arms. They are the result of intense training on lifting their body weight relentlessly. In the end, the gold was won by Mongolian gymnast Erdennbold Ganbat. The awarding ceremonies were held shortly after the competition at the middle of the hall. It would be my first time to witness and Olympic awarding ceremony. The national anthem of the gold medal winner was played just like the summer Olympics. By that time, no, by the time I entered the venue, I was already convinced that I made the right decision to watch the games.
