The morning was nothing but non-stop eating. Starting from breakfast, a snack of Melaka laksa and Cendol, and finally lunch. This was going to be my last meal at Melaka since I need to get back to Singapore that afternoon, I can’t risk missing the bus back. I remember passing by a very elegant restaurant which specializes in Peranakan food. Peranakan as you know, can be thought of as Malay and Chinese food all in one.

The Restoran Peranakan is located in a very elegant looking shophouse which has been carefully restored. Part of the fun of visiting this place is to have a look at the inside of a Peranakan house. Looking at this place would give the impression that the Peranakan were rich people as the decors of the restaurant were quite ornate. The Restoran Peranakan reminds me a lot of The Baba House, which is also a refurbished shophouse, in this case, turned into a guest house.

The entrance of the restaurant will surely impress you with its detail. The gold color on them will impart a feeling of luxury and even royalty. The next section of the house showcases a lot of furniture used in the old days. There, a wooden box, for a lack of a better term, where a bride stays while waiting for the groom in a wedding. There are holes alongside the box where wooden poles a pushed through so two men can carry the box to wherever.

So even if you don’t eat at the Restoran Peranakan, you can still explore the interior of the restaurant, to a certain point. It is really worth a visit.
