Eating at Jonker 88

One of the great pleasures of being in Melaka is eating at their very lively food scene. Since Meleka is a veritable melting pot of races. It is little surprise that there are a lot of cuisines that be found here. I have been exposed to a lot of Asian cuisines and it is quite interesting to see most of them here. Chinese is a definite given here. Malay food is also another given. So it was a little tough trying to figure out where which one you want to try out.

Queue Outside Jonker 88

Queue Outside Jonker 88

Over the past two days, I notice on stall along Jonker Street which was consistently full, or at least it appears to be full. There was always a long queue of people outside the entrance of Jonker 88. For the longest time I tried to get in there but the long queue turned me off. This time I was determined to go in. So just exactly what everyone was queueing up for? There were two stalls at the entrance. One was selling prawn noodles and laksa. The other one was selling dessert. All of a sudden it made sense. They put the ordering stations outside the stall, to make it appear that there was a queue, so I thought.

I decided to take the laksa. Laksa is a noodle dish with curry and a bit of coconut flavor. Typical contents of laksa can be seafood and fried tofu. It is typically a soup based noodle dish. Another type, the Penang laksa is sour. The Melaka laksa is supposedly one of the best laksa anywhere, so the best place to try it is here. I was never fond of coconut based products and I normally avoid it whenever I could. But since it was supposedly the best laksa in Malaysia, I might as well give it a shot.

It was surprisingly agreeable. The coconut flavor wasn’t as strong as I expected it to be. The spice was just nice too. For the first time, I actually enjoyed having laksa. I probably only had laksa two or three times in my life. This adventure made me change my impression of laksa. Most of the ones I have tried were probably the bad ones, but now I know it can actually be tasty.
