Inside the Guanyin Temple in Melaka's Chinatown

The Goddess of Mercy or Guanyin is a familiar fixture in Chinese communities. She is commonly associated with the Buddhist religion. Although Buddhism did not originate in China, the Chinese readily adopted the religion and thus numerous temple dedicated to the Guanyin have been erected all over the world. Little surprise that Melaka’s Chinatown also has its own Guanyin Temple. This temple, however, is a more modest one compared to the others.

The Guanyin Temple in Melaka is a rather humble one with only one story for the temple building. The temple building houses an image of the Goddess of Mercy. There are typically three small low “stools” where devotees would kneel with incense and pray to her. The temple itself isn’t that ornate but it is still nice, just not as richly decorated as the ones I have been to.
