Walking along the shaded paths of Fort Canning Park is an interesting experience. Probably one of the more significant structures in the park is the a surprising little bungalow near a flight of stairs. This charming little house is called Raffles’ House. As can be deduced from the name of the place. Raffles’ House is where the Stamford Raffles resided during his visits to Singapore. Apparently, Fort Canning used to be the abode of Malay Kings and it would seem that it was fitting for the most important figure of the land to be living there.

According to notes from Raffles himself, the hill wasn’t really that high but there is already a perceptible difference in the climate. Obviously, Singapore was just as hot as it is now. But I seriously doubt that a minor elevation like that can change the temperature so much. I would like to think that it was the sea breeze that made them think that way. Raffles’ House was close to the public, though you can have a peek through the windows. Surprisingly, there was nothing in there. Either way, Raffles’ House has been restored well and it truly befits housing one of Singapore’s most important historical figures.
