Colonial Style Entrance to Fort Canning

One of the more well known landmarks in Singapore is the place known as Fort Canning. Fort Canning used to serve as the heaadquarters of the British command during the war years. Now, it is a peaceful place for visitors to walk and enjoy nature. The choice of Fort Canning’s location is not accidental. Fort Canning is actually located on a hill overlooking the rest of Singapore. Singapore is already quite flat and any minor elevation is quickly taken into consideration. The hill’s proximity to the sea made it a natural choice as a viewing platform against invaders from the sea.

As a result of continuous land reclamation, Fort Canning hill is now very much inland and it is no longer possible to see the sea from here. The growth of trees on the area made seeing the sea a much tougher chore. I started my exploration of Fort Canning from the back entrance of the National Museum of Singapore. You just need to cross the street and you are already in Fort Canning. There are numerous structures that remind visitors of the colonial past of Fort Canning. There were also some new ones which showcase the history of Singapore.
