Tunnels of Fort Pasir Panjang

Entrance to the Labrador Tunnels

Because of the strategic location of Labrador Park, the British set up a fort here to serve as defense against and possible Japanese invasion from this location. This fort was called Fort Pasir Panjang. Together with the massive guns and multiple gun emplacements a network of tunnels were also built by the British, most probably served as a storage area for weapons and ammunition. Interestingly, the tunnels were only discovered in 2001, after having been abandoned by the British in their surrender to the Japanese in World War II.

Some parts of the tunnels have already been opened to the public but unfortunately for me, the tunnels were closed during my visit. There was maintenance work being done at that time so I would probably need to go back some other time. The walls fort were already overgrown with vegetation too, but the doors were most probably replaced quite recently. I would like to visit this area soon, hopefully I would get a chance to.
