Liang Seah Street is one of those streets in Singapore lined with a lot of restaurants and eating places. The food starts from a popular coffee shop followed by a slew of restaurants. The selection can vary from local to Chinese to Vietnamese to Western. One of my favorite haunts is this unassuming place named Maggie Thai & Chinese Restaurant. They are conveniently located near a pair of hotels, so a large part of their clientele are foreigners. The nice thing is that their prices are still reasonable.

I can’t say how they got their name, I don’t know who Maggie is or whether she is Thai. Their food is composed mostly of local selections so I can’t say that they are a Thai restaurant, although they do have tom yam soup somewhere. Whenever I come here the staff always greet me, naturally after coming here for so many times, they would already know me. They have recently upgraded their place by outfitting it with airconditioning, a welcome addition since Singapore is hot. Thankfully, prices were not adjusted to pay for the upgrade.

I always order their local food here which I would say it quite okay. My all time favorite is their butter squid. Which is basically deep fried squid into something like calamares but maybe tastier. The dish is decorated with basil leaves and some chili for good measure. It goes great with Thai sweet chili sauce or plain mayonnaise. I just wish that they have a rice meal with this since one dish might be too expensive and too much for one person to eat.

Another one of my regular orders is their prawn paste chicken. This is a very tasty fried chicken which as the name suggest is fried with prawn paste. The skin is very crunchy and tasty, although sometimes ordering this with butter squid may make the meal a little too dry. So we always partner this with something with a little more moisture such as hot plate bean curd or some vegetable dish.

Most of the staff here are very friendly, if you are a foreigner you might find yourself greeted in you native language by one of the staff. They might even take your order in your native language though your mileage may vary. The only time I got irritated by one of the staff was when she suddenly abandoned us in mid-order to wait on a few Caucasian customers. It was as if their money was more valuable than mine. Fortunately, this was only one time and I no longer see this lady.

  1. i like the taste of tom yom seafood and head fish soup . Monstly my lunch is from this shop . all staff are very friendly and one guy’s ( from myanmar) is better than the other staff . he can explain about special menu and how’s the taste. I will continuous support .

  2. the restaurant shop recently changed hands, i believe it was last year. the food, thankfully, has not changed much, after all why change a winning formula. i haven’t been to the place recently though, i liked the people there since there was very friendly even if some of them don’t speak much english. the food wasn’t spectacular but it was nice enough to keep me coming back.

    thanks for visiting!
