Pulau Ubin Fishing Village

Floating Village in Pulau Ubin

Floating Village in Pulau Ubin

The nicely paved biking road branched off to a dirt road. From here on, the ride became much more rough and I would say more dangerous since I’m no expert in riding a bike. We came across this trail which led us somehwere down a hill. The trail was somewhere near the water and we can actually get off an explore the area. This was one thing I never expect to find here in Singapore – it actually has a fishing village.

Okay maybe the word village may be too strong a word. The village actually just consists of a four huts at that spot. There were other clusters too but this was the nearest one. It didn’t seem like there was anyone there at the time, but it was obvious the people still live there. It is hard to believe that this place is still Singapore. I didn’t see any boat nearby the will let the villagers come ashore. It is possible that they were all out fishing. If there is any proof that Pulau Ubin is a throwback to Singapore in the 1960’s this is living proof of that.

Pulau Ubin is known for its fresh seafood. This is probably one of the places that the local restaurants get their supply from. Certainly, they can’t be going to the mainland just to get their seafood? Amusingly, the floating houses also have their own little gardens just to make sure there is still greenery. Since typhoons never pass by here I don’t think it gets very exciting here.
