Gyoza no Ohsho's Famous Gyoza

In my wanderings around Singapore, I would once in a while wander into an eating place that turns out to be not too bad for my tastes. One of these restaurants is Gyoza no Ohsho or King of Gyoza. Maybe restaurant might be too strong a word for this since it looks more like a hole in the wall type of eating place. After all the eatery just across is a normal Singapore coffee shop. Gyoza no Ohsho is at Cuppage Plaza and is just one of several Japanese places in that building alone. It would seem that the building has a lot of Japanese customers.

Gyoza no Ohsho is not exactly pure Japanese food, it is descibed to be Chinese food done the Japanese way, confused yet? The people cooking are not even Japanese. Owing to their name, naturally they are quite famous for their Gyoza which is basically Japanese dumplings. I’m not sure how different gyoza is supposed to be from normal guo tie 锅贴 but I really couldn’t tell. I guess I’m not that much of a Japanese food expert. But the gyoza was great. You can order them pan fried or deep fried, I have tried both and I would prefer the pan fried one. The place also has ramen, of which they have several citations in magazines and newspapers, I would agree that the soup broth is actually quite tasty and because of this, I have come to a deeper appreciation of ramen, which would lead me to visit some of the nearby Japanese stalls. The noodles were more like the instant noodle kind but the soup was nice enough to make me ignore it.

My main complaint about Gyoza no Ohsho is the restaurant space, or rather, the lack of it. The restaurant can probably accomodate only 20 people max at one time. This lack of space forced them to put seats right in front of the cooking area, I guess much like a normal Japanese stall. However, stay too long there and you’d end up smelling like gyoza. They have numerous choices and I feel that it is a place worth going back to. As for being a good Japanese food place, I would leave it to the experts to decide, I was happy there and would definitely recommend my friends to go there.
