The area around the Sultan Mosque is Singapore is also known as Kampong Glam. There are a significant number of Malay related structures here in this area, one is the Sultan Mosque itself. However, what may not be that obvious anymore are the grounds right beside the Sultan Mosque itself. This patch of green used to be where the palace of the Sultan when they moved here, with the mosque nearby serving as their own. The palace grounds used to be much larger but has now been encroached by other establishments such as restaurants.

After extensive renovation, the palace grounds have been relaunched as the Malay Heritage Center or Taman Warisan Melayu. This place is now more like a park than a palace. The centerpiece is now the Malay Heritage Museum. Outside the grounds of the center are several replicas like a boat used by the sea faring Malays at that time and a traditional Indonesian long house. Honestly, I don’t think there was much to see in the Malay Heritage Center, or maybe I’m just not into culture. Maybe they could make the place more interesting by turning it into a palace once again.
