It may not be too obvious to westerner but Singapore has a large Muslim community courtesy of its neighbors Malaysia and indonesia. Even in the 1800s and 1900s Singapore was a center for Islamic trading. With the coming of the British this has been somewhat subdued. However, the British managed to get the cooperation of the local Sultan in exchange for a small fortune. The sultan then built this mosque where it now stands. It has since been rebuilt and expanded several times.
