Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery

The Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery

The Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery

Our final stop at our Inle Lake tour is the Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, this tongue twister of a monastery still built on Inle Lake and is only accessible by boat. The name is also redundant since kyaung means monastery. The teak monastery was built back in the 1850s and it is still holding up. From the outside the temple doesn’t really seem that interesting. Obviously from its age, it certainly looks like it is centuries old. I’m surprised that despite being built on top of the lake it is stil around.

Looks Abandoned

Looks Abandoned

The monastery itself is quite huge, however from the outside it doesn’t to be busy, in fact it seems to be abandoned. However we were assured that this was still a working monastery and it still has a lot of monks in the structure. The fact that the sun was already going does probably enhances that abandoned look with most visitors having already finished visiting the temple. If my luck continues to hold up, we can have the monastery all to ourselves.
