Just as any self respecting church in Bohol, the Church of Saint Augustine also has a bell tower of its own. The four storey tower of coral stone is reputedly the tallest in the country. Looking at the surrounding area, it was not hard to tell why the tower needed to be tall. The church of Saint Augustine is built beside the sea, however between the sea and the church there is a buffer of some mangrove swamps, which will make it difficult for lookouts to spot any invaders.

The need of a tall bell tower for this area is more important since it is one of the southernmost points in Bohol. And for a fledgling Spanish emprie it better not be snuffed out that easily by any attacks by the natives. The tower is in bad shape. There are cracks appearing on the sides of the tower it is really in danger of crumbling down. The plants that have made their home in the crevices of the tower force the blocks apart, and can eventually bring down the tower. The tower is currently off limits to visitors for good reason, any more traffic can surely doom it. I hope the authorities can start the restoration process for the tower which is sorely needs.
