Watchtower of Dauis

Watchtower of Dauis

Watchtower of Dauis

Since the main door of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is closed, I started to explore the area around the church. Built separately from the church is another belltower. Actually, I think watch tower would be more appropriate since the church already has a belltower. The watchtower is around three storeys high and surprisingly it was open. The path to the top wasn’t very inviting since it was all green and mouldy. The ground was also littered with candy and junk food wrappers. I was very careful not to touch anything there. I was also careful with my footing since the steps were very small, one small step would send me back down the stairs. Not good.

Grimey Walls of the Watchtower

Grimey Walls of the Watchtower

Sadly, the walls of the this watchtower was riddled with graffitti. You can already guess who wrote them just by reading the walls. The dark stairs of the watchtower eventually gave way to the top where one can have a view of the surrounding area. The view wasn’t really that spectactular anyway. From the top you can see the small park around the church and further up is the harbor of Tagbilaran City. With nothing to keep me interested, I started my way back down.

Looking back at the watchtower, the entrance apparently has what I presume to be the year it was built, 1774. At least it looked like a 1774 but I wasn’t sure. I hope that the church maintains the belltower as well as they maintain the church beside it. I would be a waste if the watchtower would fall into ruin just because of a little mould. The rubbish would can be easily handled by a little discipline. Actually, it is possible that the tourists are the ones littering this place. It would also help if the locals have more awareness of this tower since they probably all take it for granted since it has been there for the longest time.
