Pushing further up north of Magsingal Church, we finally leave the province of Ilocos Sur, and move on to its northern counterpart, Ilocos Norte. We arrive at the town of Badoc in Ilocos Norte. This town is the birthplace of the Philippines most illustrious painters – Juan Luna.

Juan Luna lived in the final years of the Spanish era in the Philippines. It is also noteworthy that he also contributed much to ending the era of Spanish colonization in the Philippines. Juan Luna was a world reknowned painter, his style inspired by famous painters of course with style that is his own. His works won internation recognition in several exhibitions and also helped to trigger nationalism in the country that eventually led to the Philippine Revolution.

It is quite obvious from the house that the Luna family was quite well to do. The house is an attractive two story brick house. It is now converted into a repository for Juan Luna memorabilia and a few paintings. Most of his famous ones, most notably, the Spoliarium, which won the gold medal in the Madrid Exposition in 1884, are stored in the National Museum in Manila. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take photographs indoors, so we just contented ourselves to taking shots outside the house.

It was inspiring to be able to visit the house of one of the more famous historical personalities of the Philippines, and it is similarly wonderful how the locals have not forgotten about him to this day.
