East Mebon

After happily exploring the wonderful Banteay Srei. It was time we moved back to our starting point – East Mebon. The East Mebon was a actually just around the corner from Pre Rup, but our driver decided to bring us to the further ones first – Banteay Samre and Banteay Srei.

The East Mebon is right in the middle of the colossal East Baray. The East Baray is now completely dry though. It is really hard to imagine how this entire area was flooded with water. The East Mebon complex is already huge to begin with and yet it used to take a boat to be able to reach here.

Fortunately for us, we do not need to take a boat to reach this place. The East Mebon, looks much like Pre Rup, in fact one can be mistaken from the other. As the name suggests, there is also a West Mebon, this time it is in the West Baray, the West Baray is still three quarters full, so it will take a boat to be able to get to the West Mebon. Unfortunately, nothing much is left from the West Mebon.

The East Mebon was built in the late 10th century and is dedicated to the god Shiva. Of note here are the statues of lions and elephants guarding the corners of the complex. And similar to Pre Rup it is also made of bricks.
