Just further along the Sra Srang, a massive temple mountain was built in the 10th century. Pre Rup was commissioned by Rajendravarman II. The design of Pre Rup predates the designs found in other temple mountains like Angkor Wat and the Bayon. What is notable is their use of bricks to build the towers.

Even the decorations of the walls aren’t as elaborate as its more recent counterparts. However, it does not mean that Pre Rup is not interesting at all. In fact it is quite the opposite. Like its newer counterparts, the towers of Pre Rup recede as the height increases. This gives the illusion that the towers are taller than they actually are.

It is possible climb all the way up to the top of Pre Rup. Visitors can get a great view of the temple from the top. In fact you can even see some of the other temples from the top. While on top, you can also explore the towers, some of the towers are hollow and have been turned into places of worship.

Since it was still quite early, there weren’t that many people exploring Pre Rup, but as soon as we went down the temple a busload of tourists quickly pulled up. So much for peace and quiet.
