Komala Vilas Vegetarian Restaurant

Indian Meal at Komala Vilas

Indian Meal at Komala Vilas

It has been a while since I was last in Little India in Singapore. One day, I was taking some friends around Singapore, we went to Little India. The idea was to have lunch there. The only place I know to eat at Little India is a place I myself haven’t been to. The name of the place is Komala Vilas. It is a vegetarian restaurant some colleagues of mine have been wanting to bring us to. Unfortunately, they never really got to bring us there.

Cafeteria-Like Feel of Komala Vilas

So finally, I got a chance to enter this place. Honestly, I was expecting a more fine dining type of experience, but instead, the feel is more like a cafeteria. Don’t get me wrong, the place is nice and clean and it is air conditioned. Probably the interiors of the place lent a more cafeteria-like feel. The ushers asked us to go upstairs to the second floor. The interiors were just like the one below. There were a lot of Indians eating at the place which led me to believe that this place is quite good. There were also a couple of foreigners in the place. Seems like this place is quite recommended.

We got ourselves a seat and went to the counter and order. The menu is all displayed on the wall, and it comes with pictures, so you know what you are ordering. I got the Vegetable Briyani Meal. Everything comes out served on a metal tray, much like a cafeteria would. The normal way to eat it is with your hands. Since I have no plans of getting curry on my camera, I used the foreigner way – fork and spoon.

My meal comes with a huge serving of briyani rice and four different viands to eat the rice with. It also comes with the poppa-dums and one chapatti. The idea is to use the different sauce together with the rice and chapatti and eat it. It was not my first time to eat Indian food so I know what to expect. My friends were not as exposed to Indian food as I am so they were a little confused. Actually, with the big number of sauces available, I wasn’t really sure which one goes with what. Luckily a nearby Indian customer noticed our predicament and cheerfully helped us.

I like eating a lot of rice. And I’m not one to back down from another serving. I found out that the rice that came with my meal was surpringly packed. It was like it never runs out. I found myself having difficulty finishing the whole thing. My friends were likewise surprised that they have difficulty finishing the meal. It was really a lot.

After managing to finish the meal, on our way down, I noticed that they were selling some Indian snacks below. They looked really tempting but unfortunately, I was too stuffed to try them. Maybe next time. Overall, I would say that I was well worth it go there. Even though it was a vegetarian restaurant, it was really filling and full of flavor, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Komala Vilas is very accessible, it is right on Serangoon Road in Little India. Just take the MRT to Little India and head off to Serangoon Road.
